Too Cool for Internet Explorer

The death of a snooker player, and Google buys YouTube.

October 10th, 2006 by Wheelz

This morning I woke up to two bits of news both making me sad.  The first is the Paul Hunter the snooker player has died of cancer.  He was a great player and I’m sure what we saw of him was only the start of wonderful things in his career.  The world of snooker has lost a big personality and my thoughts go out to his family.  We’ll all miss you Paul.

Secondly, Google has bought YouTube for £882million.  Now I like google the search engine, its the only one I use.  But I have a problem with this big giant of the internet buying what is essentially a ‘free for all’ video hosting site.  As it stood until yesterday you could upload pretty much anything and no-one was really bothered; so copywrite was sometimes broken but no-one really cared.  But now Its owned by Google I wonder how long the entertainment lawyers will leave it alone.  Google has shed-loads of cash that they could try and sue out of them.  The disasterous thing which I think will happen is youtube will loose all its interesting and fun videos because as soon as G notices a copywrited song or tv show they will simply pull it from the site.

How long before we see a new youtube style site pop up to fill the void?  Not long I’ll bet.
